wanderwonder | Cambodia - Phnom Penh [1/2]

Saturday, 10 May 2014
Flew via Tiger Air to Phnom Penh. It was a really early flight - but we were surprisingly awake and energetic.
We have been looking forward to this trip for ages. Since we have practically known each other for more than half our lives, we kind of always hoped to go overseas together. It's alot tougher as you grow older though - and everyone seems to be at different stages in their lives and studies. So this is the sweetest spot we could find - Jovyn and Joel cleared their NS leave, Minron and I are on summer break and Al is done with uni. Only the five of us embarking on an adventure overseas this time, but I really really hope that the rest will be able to join us soon!

Out of focus but its alright, WE ARE HAPPY AND READY TO GO!

Upon arrival: getting our 3G Sim Cards! Its only about 3-4 USD for 1 GB of data usage. Sweet!

Opted for Airport Transfer Service provided by Me Mates Villa - our super friendly hostel.
10USD for a taxi. 5 of us and our backpacks fit in just right.
Dropped our bags off since check-in was only at 1300. Our flight had actually landed in Phnom Penh at about 0900, plus we gained an hour from the time difference.
Therefore, for the entire day, we felt as though time was crawling by because
1. We started the day early
2. The pace of life in Cambodia, even in a relatively built up city like Phnom Penh, felt way slower than in Singapore
3. We are on vacationnnnnnn! (MODE: LAIDBACK)

Basically we walked around a lot, and made frequent stops at eateries/cafés because the heat was unbelievable! It was sweltering hot.

We had a lot of fun just wandering around though. There was this stall that served very memorable noodles (we just called it Maggi Mee because its so similar to the instant noodles we have back home, except that it was tastier, with a somewhat Thai-style spicy kick to it) for USD 1!!!!! Also, huge iced teas and very adorable wait staff at the very same place. Thumbs up.

Took our first tuk-tuk ride for USD 3 and we were hooked! Thereafter, it was tuk-tuks all the way in Cambodia! ;)

Visited the National Museum. Entry was 5 USD per person.
Worth a trip only if you are deeply interested in Southeast Asian Art. Even then, it is not a very impressive collection. The building itself was quite a sight against the clear blue skies though. :)

Something else that I won't ever forget: walking through a wet market.
It was truly wet, everything was raw and flipping and alive, and an incredibly real experience. Incredibly real meaning that all my senses were all alert - there would be huge ass fishes flopping in large metal basins just 30cm from my feet (oh so vulnerable in slippers), exotic fruits and spices and vegetables in a riot of shapes and colours and meat of all cuts hanging off glistening metal hooks.

Really though, the raw fish got to me. For some reason I was just pretty afraid of that sight haha poor J had to get a good grip on me and lead me out.

The wet market was also the place where a sweet Cambodian girl bumped into Minron. When she looked up at him, MY GOODNESS, her expression was absolutely priceless.
It's like, love at first sight or something.
We all noticed that look, except Minron of course. HAH.
It was quite funny, but Min refuses to believe us. That served as teasing fodder for awhile though.
Another random good find, Heng Heng Oyster.
We saw a lot of locals in this eatery - and it was at the odd hour of about 1600.
We were so full but we couldn't resist trying out the seafood.
The grilled fish was super fresh and tasted amazing. The boys tried to scare me by saying that they just grabbed the fish from the nearby wet market. Haha. I tried not to think about it as I gingerly took my bites.

Night market!
Airy pants are a must buy. The cheapest price we got was 3 USD a pair, even though we bought in bulk. A decent price to pay for comfy pants! They came in all colours and patterns so be careful not to overspend. It is so tempting and pretty normal if you wish to get about a million designs for yourself. Hah.

Alcohol is really cheap in Cambodia. Dirt. Cheap.
You can never score cocktails for USD 3-4 in Singapore.

Phnom Penh > Siem Reap!

But first, let us have some breakfast.
 "YEAH NOODLES FOR YOU TOO?!"
 Smeyes....(Smiling with the eyes)
Uh-huh.
Bokeh overload.

Phnom Penh was incredibly fun. Staying in a 6-man dorm room together made it all the more fun.
From wake-up calls to Joel's snoring to eating every other hour - it was a great start to bigger adventures.

Next post on Siem Reap!
